Separation Anxiety
Sullivan fought for each breath. He killed part of his pursuers. The others lost him in an abandoned town. Sullivan hid in a gas station menâs room. He managed to find a first aid kit behind the counter before locking the door. He used a bottle of water and paper towels to clean his wounds.
âDamn it,â he hissed. The paper towels felt like sandpaper against the gashes. He found some antibacterial cream in the box next to him and emptied the tube trying to treat them. Sullivan struggled to cover each wound.
A peek out the door earned a quick limp out for any possible supplies. He carried a bag and an ax. Every few steps he paused to listen for any movement. Sullivan did not hear anything. He threw caution to the wind. He rushed to work gathering three gallons of water, two cases of water by the door. When he secured the water he found what food was safe to eat. He had to limit to canned and packaged foods not requiring preparation.
Sullivan shoved everything into the restroom. He made one more sweep for anything that could help. He found some more first aid supplies and painkillers. He checked behind the counter when the shrieks broke the silence.
âShit,â Sullivan said. He started to run back to the restroom when he saw a revolver. He grabbed the pistol and a box of shells. He rushed through the door clicking the lock behind him.
The shrieks grew louder through the barrier between him and possible death. The revolver was loaded. He kept it in his hand as a first defense so he could save his energy. Sullivan sat against the wall facing the door. One gallon of water was left at the entrance. If anything came through, he could slow their progress with the water.
Sullivan held his labored breath waiting for a demon to claw its way into the restroom at him. He had no way to track how many minutes passed. The noises in the gas station subsided and he breathed again.
He eased across the floor to a case of water. The stubborn plastic held for as long as it could against his ripping. He pulled a bottle free twisting the lid for a small taste of survival. Sullivan took his time savoring each drink. He opened the second one before searching through his bag of food. He found a can of ravioli that had not reached the expiration date. He popped it open devouring the contents with his hand. Halfway through his meal, he stopped. Guilt gripped him as he hoped Sam was alive.
Sam crouched behind the large rocks for shelter from the baking sun. He managed to grab their packs when he made his run for safety, but he knew his supplies were low. He refused to drink more than a sip every few minutes despite the amount of sweat pouring from his skin. Sam shook the canteens. His did not have much more than half. Sullivanâs canteen was full.
